During the two-day <strong>text-based<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>discussion<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>seminar<\/strong> participants were challenged by questions about the\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">sources and roots of their values and the way how to apply them. The dialogue was based on readings from the classics of the world&#8217;s spiritual heritage to modern authors, which gave\u00a0participants<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span>the opportunity to return to the roots of European thought, to reflect of the role of values and virtues in society, to understand the tension between ideas and material needs competing in a globalizing world, and in the context of present-day Central Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The Aspen Institute branches around the world organize such seminars on value-based leadership for leaders to whom they offer the opportunity to discover new perspectives through dialogue and critical discussion. Leaders from\u00a0politics, business, academia and the\u00a0arts debate texts by philosophers, sociologists or politicians, focusing on\u00a0the values of\u00a0leadership\u00a0and the way how to apply them.<\/p>\n<p>The first module, moderated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.unifr.ch\/philosophie\/de\/departement\/team\/filip-karfik.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Filip Karf\u00edk<\/a>,\u00a0professor of ancient philosophy in Fribourg, was dedicated to <strong><em>Classical Values: Law, Freedom, Virtue, Happiness.<\/em><\/strong> Participants discussed h<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ow we perceive the ideas of law and justice, virtues and wisdom based on readings of texts by Greek philosophers such as Aristoteles, Plato, Solon and others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitutece.org\/people-profile\/marek-prochazka\/\">Marek Proch\u00e1zka<\/a>,\u00a0founding partner at PRK Partners, led the second part <em><strong>Leadership Issues in Business<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0as an Oxford-style debate\u00a0with groups arguing for or against free market, regulations, diversity in business\u00a0and\u00a0social responsibility of corporations, encouraging the leaders to think out of the box and beyond their believes to try and understand concepts from other school of thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>In the third session, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitutece.org\/people-profile\/michael-zantovsky\/\">Michael \u017dantovsk\u00fd<\/a>,\u00a0executive director of the V\u00e1clav Havel Library, introduced the debate <em><strong>Common Central European Roots<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0by defining features of Central Europe and its heritage based on themes arising from texts by the prominent thinkers of the 20th century as Leszek Kolakowski, Czeslaw Milosz, Gy\u00f6rgy Konr\u00e1d, V\u00e1clav Havel, Milan Kundera, Jan Pato\u010dka and T. G. Masaryk.
