Aspen Review: Can Europe Ever Be a Superpower?

What is the European Union's future – a "United States of Europe" or a "Eurocalypse Now", asks Luuk van Middelaar in the opening article of the latest Aspen Review Central Europe, making this question the cover story of the latest issue. Dutch historian, political philosopher and a member of the Herman Van Rompuy's cabinet does not expect a revolution, nor a break-up of the EU. To find out more have a look at the full article attached below.

Apart from the polemics on the Old Continent's future the Politics section introduces articles about Germany after elections, perspectives for Ukraine or the interview with Sir James Mancham on the rise of China and current geopolitical issues. The Economy section offers a selection of texts on Hungarian oil and gas strategy, the Czech – Polish relations and the austerity measures' impact in Lithuania. In the Culture section you will find a review of Jiří Suk's latest book "Politics as the Theater of the Absurd: Václav Havel 1975 – 1989" or an essay on the socially engaged cinema in Central Europe after 1989 by Jakub Majmurek.
