Prof. MUDr. Jan Pirk, DrSc. is the Director of the Cardiovascular Surgery Department at the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine in Prague (IKEM). He has been working for the Institute since 1974, starting his specialization in arterial grafts. In the eighties, professor Pirk participated in an internship in New Orleans, United States and in 1990 – 1991 he was a consultant at the University Hospital in Odense, Denmark. In 1991 he performed his first heart transplant, since then he managed to accomplish around 250 more. Being one of the best rated heart surgeons in Europe, he has realized around seven thousand heart surgeries. He also lectures at the Charles University; his scientific activity is documented in numerous professional articles and monographs. He was voted the Czech Personality of 2013 by readers of Czech online news server iHNed.cz.
